On the morning of March 14, 2019, the American flag was lowered for the last time at the United States Embassy in Caracas. This morning, March 14, 2026, at the same hour, my team and I raised the United States flag—exactly seven years after it was removed.
A new era has begun for relations between the United States and Venezuela.
Come to think of it. You are correct, I've never seen the fringe on an outdoor flag. So, what is the difference between an American flag and a United States flag?
Back in 1992, I attended a Michigan militia meeting. They handed out photocopied pamphlets, discussing many things like the federal reserve and the United States being incorporated.
They had a page for flag meanings, with vs without gold fringe. The gold fringe was supposed to mean that a different set of rules were in effect (admiralty law), one of the main differences were that jury trials were not required.

American flag-United States flag. Is the difference the gold fringe?
Gold fringe denotes maritime admiralty law.
I don't think I've ever seen one flying on a flagpole - only indoors...aka just beyond "the bar" "aboard a vessel" IYKYK
Me, either...
A powerful moment. Great post GDZ!

There IS a difference... but you have to dig on it to find it.
Sorry I don't have it at the ready.
Come back and let everyone else know what you find.
