If you’re referring to the Iranian F-14s, don’t. They’re of the 1st generation and had no where near the avionics packages that their U.S. models had at the time. The last of the stick and rudder wired fighters.
I don’t believe there are. We discontinued them early 2000’s with the F-18s doing the yeoman work. It was a high maintenance machine. In fact, I was onboard the USS Carl Vinson cruise when an F-14 fired a Phoenix missile (the very purpose of the Tomcat development) and it failed miserably to take its target of a rogue Iraqi (or Iranian) fighter. The enemy fighter hightailed it out of the area safely. Later it was determined the cause for the misfire was the flight deck Aviation Ordnancemen did not connect the weapon umbilical. The missile just fell directly to earth when released.
yes, the point of my inquiry was that we learned earlier during this operation that the only other tomcats besides USNavy, were those iranian. since the US did not want spare parts going to iran, all the deactivated planes were either crushed, or cut up for scrap or had the parts that made their variable pitched wings removed (for museum displays) so there are no operable f-14's except what were in iran, and those are now supposedly destroyed. it would have been nice if we could have gotten them or at least one back, kind of like Tom Cruise did in that movie....
I guess I'm missing something...
So a musium piece in a hardened musium?
"From an unconfirmed source:" Why post it if it is from CNN. /s
How do we know this bag of ass can even fly?
more concerned with an F-14....
