I remember one girl from Ukraine where her husband did not allow her to even speak when in public. As a health care provider, that sent off alarm bells for me. She spoke and understood English well enough that there was no reason why she couldn't speak for herself. But if I asked her a question, he would answer for her. Her husband come off like an absolute dickhead so I can't imagine her situation at home was a good one. In her case I didn't see any obvious signs of what appeared to be physical abuse. But I have no doubt there was probably some psychological abuse taking place. Sadly, she was not the only woman that I have met in a similar situation.
