After lots (and lots) of posts or comments you get one assigned automatically. There had been some exceptions a long time ago because of a specific mod, but he left. Maybe that'll change but you'd have to ask a mod.
I'm on 28637 post score. How many more do I need to get a Greekish avatar? Something partly Greek.

I think you need 40K. I didn't get to choose. The special ones like Purkiss were a special request by the mod who bailed, I believe.
