To compound the problem, Iran's military and police aren't being paid... and their annual inflation rate is roughly 70% so far for 2026. That's just the official rate.
Iran imports nearly 100% of its corn and a majority of its other critical agricultural staples (rice, vegetable oil, animal feed, beans, etc... ) by sea through the Strait of Hormuz. Nearly all corn imports (approx. 10 million tons/year) arrive by sea, mostly from Brazil. Iran imports over 90% of its vegetable oil demand (approx. 1.5 million tons), including soybean and palm oil, by sea through the Strait of Hormuz, mainly from countries like Brazil, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Iran CAN get some food supplies via Russia, with deliveries across the Caspian Sea... but that's an expensive route.
In other words, their unofficial inflation rate, now that the Strait of Hormuz is closed to Iranian ports... is likely closer to 20% per month as food becomes more scarce.
Not being paid, while watching food prices (that you can't afford) continue to increase will ruffle a few feathers. If the IRGC decides to confiscate the food supply for it's own members and the police... they will face the anger of the Iranian public. If they don't seize the food supply... then their own members won't be able to afford food and their families will starve.
War is hell, right?
That brings up a GREAT idea.
The Trump Administration has the means to communicate to people in Iran and let their messages be heard. Word gets around quickly.
Start putting out the message to the Iranian people, warning them that the "IRGC is beginning to seize the food supply in the dock warehouses, grain silos and storage buildings for THEMSELVES. The IRGC is quickly grabbing up all available food supplies... and soon there will be nothing left for the Iranian public."
Of course it's not true... but if you want to start public panic, rioting, looting of food supplies and general pandemonium... and if you want people to attack the IRGC on site, or to report their locations to U.S. or Israeli forces' attention... then make sure the public has a definite interest in getting rid of the IRGC.
What better way than to let it be known (and spread by word of mouth publicly) that the IRGC is grabbing all known supplies, and everyone else will have to do without food. :>) Let's see the IRGC deal with that chaos.
