Um, make it simple enough that a 5th grade public Ed kid could understand it. The homeschool 5th grades I know read much better than their publically taught counterparts. I was suprised to see my niece reading Tolkien when she was 11. Her younger sibling, 9, was diving into the Chronicles of Narnia at that time too.
