I am such a sourpuss about the Macron government. Better than nothing? If the French naval commanders practice precise coordination (which, I suppose, is possible; they are not stupid or incompetent), maybe okay. Otherwise, they could wind up as the chimpanzee at the ball: a conspicuous, uncontrollable nuisance.
History makes the heartache. We owe a tremendous historical debt to the French and their assistance in the War of Independence (e.g., Battle of Yorktown and surrender of Great Britain). I have a dear cousin who is half French by parentage. I worked on the French part of a German-French missile project, and admired its highly integrated design. Many things to admire about the French. But their government is not one of them.
