Agreed. The plan, to my understanding, is to have AI take over most things so most people become poor and dependent on the government. Then government starts to offer virtual reality as a way to escape the "real" world which they have made suck. Then they offer "upload your "mind" which is really your soul, to the virtually reality so you can "be free and do whatever you want".
Its effectively the Matrix plot line except the bad guys get bonus points for having people willingly do this.
There is a lot of sci-fi where different takes on this have been presented but they all have the same end goal, merging humans with AI.
I think that is part of the reason why Trump and the white hats wanted federal level control over AI, to make sure we dont have rogue states tey to push too far or hold up progress.
Like it or not, our future will have less "bad" in it but that will also led to tighter controls of people in general. There is no way to avoid this since its the evolutionary path we are on, its just a question of who controls it and how transparent that control is.
The white hat plan gives us the knowledge (in due time) and a better chance at control over our destiny whereas the black hat plan involves death, destruction, and regression.

Also, too many people were making jokes about the appearance of the Emperor's true nature. But, as mentioned previously elsewhere in this thread, the IT world's need for power-driven data centers also shifted the interest of the vested interests.
