It's position is not fixed. Gravity is what holds your orbit. You also can actually measure the distance yourself with the help of one other person, and not very expensive telescopes with a solar filter, based on parallax and some simple math.
It's also been pretty accurately measured with radar, although that's prob a method you can't do yourself.
