You got it backwards. Way back when Ukraine was called Rus (Kievan Rus) a faction moved east and named themselves muscovites then later Russians.
Same as with religion, those Russians disagreed with the Pope and started Orthodox faith. Ukrainians stayed Catholic but insisted on a patriarch so Rome's rules did not undermine the original.
As for culture and language, there are 5 major regions in ukraine. The region closest to Russia (Poltava) kept it the same, Russia continued the same or very similar.
Ukraine is not a Russian territory. It was given to Stalin after WW2 and they incorporated it into the Soviet Union.

"The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR) was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union that existed from 1922 to 1991. After its proclamation on March 10, 1919, it was initially nominally independent, but in December 1922 it became one of the founding members of the USSR."
"Ukraine is a founding member of the United Nations.
Specifically, the (USSR) joined the UN on October 24, 1945 as one of the original 51 founding members. This membership was granted to the Soviet Republic to secure the Soviet Union de facto three votes in the General Assembly and, at times, two in the Security Council."

Kievan Rus was not Ukrainian, it was first Russian kingdom.
