Conservatives are flat out wrong on this issue and it frustrates me to no end.
If the government funds a thing, the government will want oversight of that thing. It may not be today, but they will. Why would I ever want to use government funds to pay for my child's education? THIS IS A SOCIALST IDEAL.
Really good point. It is true that is not fair that home school parents pay double for schooling, both education expenses/time and property taxes. However, getting the government involved in any way sounds like a bad idea. A better idea is, I don't know, maybe a VERY LIMITED GOVERNMENT. Hmmm, a certain Constitution comes to mind. Kick out the crooks and have almost no taxes at any level.
There is a lot more to this debate than this presents.
A lot of private schools do not accept state funding, let alone federal, for the very reason of curriculum independance. Likewise, thare are ways to accept some (a lot) of those funds without getting the independance taken away. You want the nitty gritty particulars, ask a private school administrator. Many are more than happy to explain it.
The trick going forward is three fold:
Continue to promote school choice and funding while it is there.
Hold private schools acountable by making sure they maintain education independance.
Hold fed and states accountable, change the funding rules to make more of the funds available to alternate education without the bad curriculum requirements.

School Choice funding is a Trojan horse.
Educate your kids without public funds.
Yeah. Brings to mind the Ronald Reagan quote.
Ah!
"I'm from the government, and I'm here to help."
Exactly.

School choice is also to allow for homeschooling. And perhaps allowing the tax dollars we already pay towards it.
If you are homeschooling with public funds, you are a public school.
How about we don't take the tax dollars and wash them through the government prior to "allowing" those dollars to be spent on education?
The propaganda machine is used by “public” schools as their curriculum support system.
Without the propaganda machine , schools will probably better focus on education.
...sure, their children go to private schools...
