That was one of the points of tariffs and luxury taxes in the old days. Only the rich were buying imported cars, cameras, watches, cigars, and wine. The poorer people didn't pay those taxes, as we were buying only domestically produced goods.
I don't want to pay any more sales tax than I am already. My property taxes aren't that much, considering I live in a large house on an acre of land. Also, at least in the NC counties I've lived in, if your only income is social security, you don't pay any property tax. You are exempt. My grandfather was exempt back in the 1970s.
By raising sales tax everyone pays including the welfare people.

And that's a good thing.
BTW, property tax is also on motor vehicles and even your furniture, etc. if you are merely renting.
