There is a point where too much civility is just an invitation for abuse. He should have forcefully interjected something like, "Do you want me to answer questions, or just sit here dumb while you throw fluff at me?"
I've seen so much rude conversational behavior in my life that I have very low tolerance for it. The offenders just skate on the presumption that no one will call them on it. And people think that being "nice" is more important than having any self-respect, so they go along with the abuse. It is hard for me in that case to figure out which side is the more disgusting. Not that I find Vance disgusting. As a lifetime debater, I admire his rhetorical incision and demeanor. Give him another 30 years of dealing with idiots and his patience may not be so elastic.
