6/22/26. Baltimore bridge Francis Scott Key bridge - MV Dali chief engineer Knew & failed to report Hazardous fuel system that had No backup system —> deferred prosecution / Deenadayalan should have reported to the Coast Guard
Excerpts
“ The Port of Baltimore was shut down for weeks, and the economic disaster was in the billions.
Back when it happened, the collapse was described as just some “catastrophic accident.” But as investigators kept digging, a much uglier picture started to form.
It turns out the ship was operating with a well-known hazardous fuel system that didn’t have a backup safeguard
“And the chief engineer, an Indian national named Karthikeyan Deenadayalan, has entered a deferred prosecution agreement after admitting he knew about the danger and didn’t report it to the U.S. Coast Guard.
…
“The agreement, announced Friday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, marks the first admission of criminal wrongdoing by an individual directly involved in operating the vessel at the center of one of the worst maritime disasters in recent U.S. history.
“Chief Engineer Karthikeyan Deenadayalan admitted that he was aware the Dali and two sister ships—the Maersk Saltoro and Cezanne—were operating with an unsafe fuel supply arrangement that lacked redundancy and could impair the vessels’ ability to recover from a power loss.”
Thank you for the doc. The absence of the Key Bridge has created so many issues, and I'm still angry that it won't be completed for at least another 4 years. And with it being all but certain Moore gets reelected, I'm better that time frame extends further.

So if they're in USA waters...why haven't they a USA pilot onboard as they approach critical port infrastructure anyway?
they actually had 2 USA pilots aboard! The Congressional Research Service report on frequently asked questions about the Balt. Bridge collapse was updated yesterday, see p. 5. https://www.congress.gov/crs_external_products/R/PDF/R48028/R48028.5.pdf
