You never lose energy, it is still there. The second law of thermodynamics says that energy/mass cannot be created or destroyed, though honestly I think this is a dumb law and should be changed. Regardless, the energy is still there. Sometimes it comes out as a form we don't find immediately useful, like heat, but it hasn't gone anywhere.
