Is this the nanny state elbowing its way into our cupboards or is this a good idea. When I saw the headline I thought all use by dates would simply vanish off of products, but after reading the article it seems to be streamlining all the different use by phrases into two. In my opinion as long as it has a date on the label, all is good.
I'll wager a case of baked beans six months past its "best before" date that the primary driver was corporate counsel seeking to reduce lawsuit liability risk. Shift blame onto the consumer for not following instructions. The increase in sales channel flow is an added bonus that gets the chief revenue officer smiling. Adding to that, FDA officials hop on board because they get to look like they are protecting public safety. A 3-way win-win-win structure gives the arrangement reinforcing longevity. It's not that expiration dates are devoid of useful information. But it's notable that they are overly conservative, including non-food perishables such as contact lenses.
^^^^Absolutely!!! I have cans that are nearing ten years past due dates and am still eating it. Like you said, as long as the can is in good shape the contents will still be good for a long long time.
Pretty much anything sold in a jar or (especially) a can will outlive the person who buys it.
Probably down to the 10th generation (or even longer) in many cases.
Scam to mass produce products and keep stock moving in, and out.
Yes, the "exp date" is a full on scam; a part of the System designed to keep people buying things they don't need (as is most everything else in our carefully crafted consumer culture).
I have used past date boxed and canned foods. If we had been down to our last bit of food, they would be edible. If you have choices, they are out of date. I would not try this with mayonnaise or salad dressing. And I would quit buying pre made salads. And I would find another store for meat.

IMO all that shit should go. Aside from milk and some other perishables lots of products can well out live their best by or exp date.

Almost everything is WAY over produced.

Most of the canned stuff in my stockpile, which began shortly before coronacon is ~5 years old.
We do cycle some of it, but it’s all still perfectly edible. As I say to my wife when she says “are you sure it’s safe?”, ask me when you’re starving.
Once there are no dents, signs of corrosion or leaks, it’s fine.

I thought food past its sell by date was donated to local food banks.

aged steak is supposed to be better?
There has to be a drying process or something. I think the whole cut is involved. Slices, sitting under saran wrap getting slimy don't count.
Initially, this sounds like a good idea- current food labels are stupid and misleading to the ave human shopper...
Perhaps they should put the date the food product was canned, baked, or packaged.
Getting fatigued with Cali "being the blue print for the rest of the country". They can FO! And that's not Find Out...
