Man was 84 going on 85 and has been in mediocre health for years at this point.
It well it could be some drawn scheme to hide. He could have also finally keeled over at a rather inconvenient moment for his cohorts. As the Average Life Expectancy for an adult man in the U.S is about 77. So he exceeded it by several years at this point.
