Criminals should not be able to hide in churches and churches should not be exempt from liability for harboring fugitives.
Understandable, but we're nit a tyrannical place state; operate under the premise of, "innocent until proven guilty"; and if you were wrongly accused, you'd probably appreciate the ability to go somewhere safe until things cooled off or you were ready/prepared to deal with the charges.
And, remember: "Truth will out" - here on earth or in the hereafter.
