My favorite when speaking to a female leftist was "You're using debate tactics on me!" when I was just being logically consistent. It wasn't "debate tactics" she felt, but rather her own brain going "Oh, right, that makes sense."

It has been this way for a long time. Nothing realltly changes. People always yean for a "truth", something to believe in. If you don't believe in something higher, you imprint on people and their institutions. You then have faith in a person (usually a charismatic leader or celebrity) and act as a literal cult.
