You don’t need to understand why everything works to make it work. Farmers were doing gene selection for thousands of years before DNA was discovered. Tons of chemistry was done before atoms were discovered.

The first smallpox vaccine was literally just a cow virus. A doctor noticed that people who worked with cattle almost never got smallpox, so he speculated that being infected with cow pox would give you immunity to smallpox. He turned out to be right even though he had no idea why.

Diversity is not strength. Farmers need to keep weeds out of their fields, prevent cross pollination with wild strains, select for top 1% genetics and cull the rest.

Reduced diversity is very intentional. You need to keep weeds and stray crops out of your fields. You need to select specific varieties for the best traits and get rid of the others.
