Holy Father, I am typing these word from the stairs of an exceptionally overcrowded early train. I should feel frustrated and even angry but I actually feel serene, sharing thoughts with You. I am not sure why this train is a smaller replacement and I have to rejoice for having a job which also gladly pays for this travel. In an hour from now I will be sitting in another train taking me to the lovely town where my employer is. Until then, let’s share my optimism to my fellow LINE HOLDers. May they all feel as blessed as I do.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Eulalia of Mérida.

Eulalia was a devout Christian virgin, aged 12–14, whose mother sequestered her in the countryside in AD 304 because all citizens were required to avow faith in the Roman gods. Eulalia ran away to the law court of the governor Dacian at Emerita, professed herself a Christian, insulted the pagan gods and emperor Maximian, and challenged the authorities to martyr her. The judge's attempts at flattery and bribery failed. Eulalia was then stripped by the soldiers, tortured with hooks and torches, and burnt at the stake, suffocating from smoke inhalation. She taunted her torturers all the while, and as she expired a dove flew out of her mouth. This frightened away the soldiers and allowed a miraculous snow to cover her nakedness, its whiteness indicating her sainthood. A shrine over Eulalia's tomb was soon erected. Veneration of Eulalia was already popular with Christians by 350; Prudentius' poem increased her fame and relics from her were distributed through Iberia. Bishop Fidelis of Mérida rebuilt a basilica in her honor around 560. Her shrine was the most popular in Visigothic Spain. Around 780 her body was transferred to Oviedo by King Silo. It lies in a coffin of Arab silver donated by Alfonso VI in 1075. In 1639, she was made patron saint of Oviedo.

Holy Father, darkness seems to have taken other the morning light on this cold December day. You however inspire me to lighten up and to be a source of warmth and clarity to those who suffer from these seasonal effects. You expect me to be an example for others to follow. When the night won’t retreat, it is our duty as a group to become the day and help the weak and the undecided to awaken. I pray I do not disappoint You.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Juan Diego.

Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, also known simply as Juan Diego (1474–1548), was a Nahua peasant and Marian visionary. He is said to have been granted apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe on four occasions in December 1531: three at the hill of Tepeyac and a fourth before don Juan de Zumárraga, then the first bishop of Mexico. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located at the foot of Tepeyac, houses the cloak (tilmahtli) that is traditionally said to be Juan Diego's, and upon which the image of the Virgin is said to have been miraculously impressed as proof of the authenticity of the apparitions.

Holy Father, Christians celebrate today the Immaculate Conception, the belief that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception. People in Lyon, France, also celebrate « La fête des lumières » and light some candles on their windows, which predates the Scandinavian Saint Lucia by about a week. I am keen on these celebrations as, in the Northern hemisphere, days are the darkest and it always provides us with opportunity to actually appreciate whatever light actually remains. Instead of complaining about how far we are from our warm Summer nights, we always should praise You for how happy we are with whatever we have.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Budoc.

The name Budoc, or Beuzec, means "saved from the waters" from the Breton beuziñ meaning "drown"; but Baring-Gould finds this "fanciful". In old Celtic, boudi means "victory" and "profit". Budoc of Dol (also Budeaux or Beuzec) was a 5th-century Breton monk and Bishop of Dol, who has been venerated since his death as a saint in both Brittany (in France) and Devon (in England). Budoc is the patron saint of Plourin in Finistère where his relics are preserved. Budoc is reputed to have been a grandson of the legendary Count Even of Brest, Viscount of Léon. His mother, Princess Azenor, was falsely accused of infidelity by her jealous stepmother, which enraged her husband, the King of Goëlo [fr], who ordered that the pregnant Azenor be thrown into the sea in a cask. (A tower of the Château de Brest is named for her.) Azenor invoked the help of Saint Brigid. The cask drifted for five months. Shortly after Azenor's baby was born, the cask washed ashore on the coast of Ireland. The story echoes Greek myth. A villager who found the mother and newborn child summoned the abbot of Beau Port, near Waterford, and the child was christened the next day. Azenor became the washer-woman of the monastery, and Budoc was raised there. Azenor's stepmother fell ill, and upon her deathbed she recanted the evil lies she had spread. Azenor's husband then sailed in search of her, and, arriving in Ireland, the couple was reconciled, but both died before they could return to Brittany. (However, a tradition in Cornouaille has Azenor founding a religious establishment at Cap Sizun). Growing up, Budoc studied at a monastery at Ardmore, thought to have been founded in the early 5th century by Declán of Ardmore, where he became a monk and later abbot. He eventually left Ireland, sailing in a stone trough that landed at Porspoder. Two stained-glass windows in the chancel of Saint-Budoc Church in Porspoder depict scenes from the life of the saint. At some unknown point, Budoc made his way to Dol, where he was named bishop of the region, possibly in connection with a monastery allegedly founded by Samson of Dol, whom he is believed to have succeeded as the local bishop.

Holy Father, I have not slept like this for a long time. It was just for 8 and a half hours, but my neck did not break my sleep every chance it had. I was inspired this week to take a quiet half hour every evening, before the prayer time, when I just read a book whilst sitting confortably with an automatic massaging device applied below my neck. This really soften my muscles which in return strain my neck much less. Sometime the solution to a persistent problem is not to address the problem itself, but rather its direct surroundings and whatever is under our own control. This leads me to this quote by Marcus Aurelius: « When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. ». I praise You for yet another beautiful day to come.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Abraham of Cratia.

Abraham of Cratia or Krateia (c. 474 – c. 558) was a Christian monk from Emesa (now Homs) Byzantine Syria. Abraham was the most important of the bishops on the see of Kratia from its foundation in the 2nd century until its dissolution in the 12th century. He is recognized as a saint in the Christian church. He was born at Emesa in Byzantine Syria, where he became a monk. When he was about eighteen, the community there was dispersed by nomadic raiders. Abraham himself fled to Constantinople where he became procurator of a monastery there. When he was only 26 years old, he was made the abbot of the monastery of Cratia in Bithynia. Some ten years later, he secretly left for Palestine seeking a quieter life. He was subsequently made to return to his monastery, where he also was shortly thereafter made the local bishop of Cratia. He served as a bishop for 13 years before he retired about 525, and again left for Palestine, and remained there for the rest of his life, living a life of religious contemplation and having becοme a hermit. He lived in a monastery at the Tower of Eudokia. He died on 6 December, which would later be his feast day.

Holy Father, a Swiss friend of mine wanted to order something from a French company which would only allow deliveries to the EU member countries. He came and asked me whether he could have the goods delivered tour French home, which, given our intimate friendship, was obviously welcome. As he could not provide a French mobile number, he had to redirect the goods to a local grocery. Pity, we then had planned not to get there for the coming weekend and the retention policy is about 5 days. I then both contacted a neighbor and also the grocery to make sure the goods would be picked in time. No QR-code was to be shown: as my neighbor is a local monument who shops at the grocery, everything was simply happily abided. That is the system that works in smaller communities where exceptions are friendly taken care of, whilst in bigger ones, they are tolerated at most. Whenever dealing with legitimate queries from stranger, always make them feel welcome to your village. I praise You for this realisation.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Dalmatius of Pavia.

Dalmatius of Pavia (Italian: San Dalmazzo, Dalmazio) (died 254 or 304 AD) is venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. It is possible that Dalmatius was simply a local preacher of northern Italy, but the century in which he lived or the manner in which he died is unknown. He was venerated at what was called Pedona (present-day Borgo San Dalmazzo). His biography was composed in the 7th or 8th centuries, its author perhaps a Lombard monk of the monastery of Pedona who was drawing from oral tradition. His biography states that Dalmatius was born at Forum Germarzorum (present-day San Damiano Macra) and became a churchman and evangelizer in Pedona. In the 10th century, when the area of Pedona was devastated during Muslim raids, Dalmatius’ relics were carried to Quargnento, where an inscription on his tomb read: [H]ic requiescit corpus sancti Dalmatii repositum ab Audace episcopo Astensi. In France, a tradition dating from the 9th century held that he died a martyr. Later legends state that he evangelized many cities of Piedmont, Emilia, and Gaul, and was killed for his faith in 254 or 304 AD. The Roman Martyrology, based on erroneous episcopal lists, considers Dalmatius a bishop of Pavia.

Holy Father, I currently entertain myself watching a show called « Ancient Apocalypse » in the evening. Some would say it’s charlatanism, but then I see there two patterns: the first is actually questioning assumptions from established « experts » who do not give proper reasons not to dig further for clues whenever finding something inhabitual. The second one reminds me of the project SETI (« Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence »). Whether or not we believe in the Little Green Men, this project has allowed many technological leaps forward which makes this red herring an actual opportunity to experiment new practical ideas which always end finding an utility. So, there are at least two kinds of « Conspiracy Theorists »: the ones just sticking to an alternate theory to fit in a group which reflects their frustration, then there are the ones choosing not to embrace any theory and enjoying to dig the fact mine to the hidden truth, whatever it implies. The later kind has my own preference. I praise You for opening my mind to just follow what seems challenging, whether its consequences are tragic or joyous. In the long term, Truth will always prevail. It is not down to us to determine whether our generation or a future one is entitled to reach it, but it is our role to make sure we neither deviate, nor slow down on this path.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Anno II.

Anno II (c. 1010 – 4 December 1075) was Archbishop of Cologne from 1056 until his death. From 1063 to 1065 he acted as regent of the Holy Roman Empire for the minor Emperor Henry IV. Anno is venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church. He was canonised in 1183 by Pope Lucius III. He was a founder or co-founder of monasteries (Michaelsberg, Grafschaft, St. Maria ad Gradus, St. George, Saalfeld and Affligem) and a builder of churches, advocated clerical celibacy and introduced a strict discipline in a number of monasteries. He was a man of great energy and ability, whose action in recognizing Alexander II was of the utmost consequence for Henry IV and for Germany. He is the patron of gout sufferers.

Holy Father, 1492 is the year we remember when we celebrate Columbus Day. Leftists shall always argue it was a step backward for Humanity but can this be? Exploring and colonizing unknown areas is a natural trend and getting acquainted to a specific environment is a specific trait intelligent minds show. Obviously, when new people come to an already inhabited place, sparks occur but I also know plenty of American people who genuinely carry much more native blood than Elisabeth Pocahontas Warren ever pretended to. Shame is what Leftists want us to feel. They expect not only ambitious, but also curious people to just look down: away from the stars, but also from You: Leftism is a mental disorder which demands people fear to thrive

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Cassian of Tangier.

Saint Cassian of Tangier (or of Tangiers or of Tingis) was a Christian saint of the 3rd century. He is traditionally said to have been beheaded on 3 December, AD 298, during the reign of Diocletian. He was a court recorder at the trial of St. Marcellus the Centurion. Aurelius Agricola, deputy prefect in the Roman province in North Africa, conducted the trial. When the death penalty was imposed on St. Marcellus, Cassian threw down his pen and declared that the sentence was unjust. He was arrested immediately and put to death a few days later.

Holy Father, The holiday is over and it went better that how well it was expected to be. Plenty of tidying, cooking, gardening, movie watching and meeting nice people made this a success. I was absolutely exhausted when I went to bed yesterday but I did have a wonderful sleep. At the time I am typing this, I am in a train to Zürich Airport where my employer has some nice offices where some colleagues and I will spend the day. I already spent an hour on my former employer’s laptop checking a week worth of emails and new appointments. I know how hectic this week will be, but then, I am only 3 weeks from the next holiday which makes me serene and comfortably aware of what’s next. I praise You for setting me in such a confident state.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Chromatius.

He was probably born at Aquileia, and grew up there. His father died when Chromatius was an infant. He was raised by his mother and his large group of older siblings. He was ordained a priest of that church in 381 and participated in the small Synod of Aquileia organized by Ambrose of Milan. After the death of Valerianus in 388, Chromatius became bishop of Aquileia. He was one of the most celebrated prelates of his time and was in active correspondence with contemporaries Ambrose, Jerome, and Tyrannius Rufinus. He baptized Rufinus and became something of a mentor to him.

Holy Father, I spent a really nice 36 hour with a friend I had not met in 10 years and also never had the opportunity to privately discuss with. I like how he is willing to discuss my political views even if he doesn’t share some of them. I especially like that we can keep discussing a really civil way and and have fun joking on neutral matters. I pray people could just act the same way we do and make our coexistence something as cosy.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Charles de Foucauld.

Orphaned at the age of six, de Foucauld was brought up by his maternal grandfather, Colonel Beaudet de Morlet. He undertook officer training at the Saint-Cyr Military Academy. Upon graduating from the academy he opted to join the cavalry. Ordained in Viviers in 1901, he decided to settle in the Algerian Sahara at Béni Abbès. His ambition was to form a new congregation, but nobody joined him. Taking the religious name Charles of Jesus, he lived with the Berbers, adopting a new apostolic approach, preaching not through sermons, but through his example.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Joseph Marchand.

Joseph Marchand (17 August 1803 – 30 November 1835) was a French missionary in Vietnam and a member of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. He is now a Catholic saint, celebrated on 30 November. In 1833, he was invited to join the Lê Văn Khôi revolt led by Lê Văn Khôi, son of the late governor of southern Vietnam Lê Văn Duyệt. He vowed to overthrow Emperor Minh Mạng and replace him with My Duong, the son of Minh Mạng's late elder brother Nguyễn Phúc Cảnh, who were both Catholics. Khoi appealed to other Catholics to join in overthrowing Minh Mạng and installing a Catholic emperor. They quickly seized the Citadel of Saigon in an uprising lasting two years. In 1835, he was arrested for supposedly having been associated with the rebellion and later executed in Huế, subsequently becoming a Catholic martyr after having his flesh pulled from his bones by tongs, known as death by a thousand cuts.

Holy Father, I had special reasons to thank You yesterday, on behalf of the many American Frens I made here and with whom we have been holding the line for almost half a decade, now. I believe this is what Thanksgiving is about. I also tend to believe most mails I keep receiving these days are commercial spams from entities which I assimilate to the Temple merchants. I can understand that, for some of them, it really is about to renew the stock to revigorate their finance and eventually purchase that bike for a grandkid in time for the coming Christmas eve, but then, for most, it just is one of many yearly campaigns aimed at keeping a business zeppelin afloat. You blessed me with resilience and I praise You for this. I shall not waste money on stuff I initially did not even need, that would be like gluttony.

Holy Father, these few days of solitude give me the opportunity to apprehend things differently. Working in the garden, for example, which was something tedious I was reluctant to do, quite become pleasant once I found out I needed to wear longer gloves and to focus on what was under the brambles to easily rid of these. It feels so good to sweat after freeing so quickly such a great surface and reclaiming our estate. Now will be the time to chop the wood and let it dry for some time so I can use it to warm the house a year or so from now. These chores just taught me they are not debilitating once we know where to focus and what we would like to achieve. My own self is like this garden: it has to be taken care of and cultivated and You are Where I should focus my prayers in this matter.

Holy Father, I may sound controversial today but You know I don’t mean any harm to anybody. When Pope Benedict XVI was in charge, he was attacked by Jewish religious authorities who demanded the official Catholic Cathechism retires a prayer asking for the conversion of the Jews. We, Christians, all understand how Judaism is what Christianity is without Christ: a religion where we are not explicitely given True Love through the Scriptures. It took Jesus for us to switch from the 10 Commandments to « You shall love your neighbour as yourself ». So, yes, they wait for the Messiah and I just confess He is among us, in our spirits, and joyfully invite them to open their eyes and see him, then read the holy Scriptures and realize how much Love there is in our world who is ruled by Jesus. The bottom-line of this is Prayer really is powerful, otherwise people would not attack us for that one.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Siffredus of Carpentras.

Saint Siffredus of Carpentras (French: Siffrein) was a bishop of Carpentras who is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. Siffredus was a monk in Lérins Abbey before becoming bishop of Carpentras at the beginning of the seventh century. Not much is known of his life and Siffredus does not appear to have participated in any church council. However, during his episcopate, he ordered the construction of many churches in Carpentras and in Venasque. Religious and popular tradition holds that Siffredus led an austere life and was zealous in his pastoral duties, caring for the poor and exorcising demons.
