I am normally the mod who removes duplicate in the morning and it's a very manual process so lots get missed. I think slightly different things can happen at different times of day, mods are variable, just like humans in general.
btw. Purkiss doesn't mean to post duplicates and he's normally good natured when I point them out. We have running jokes about it, him and I.

I'm not actually bothered by duplicates myself but its my remit to remove them because it's site policy. Sometimes having duplicate stories splits up the comments and conversation and that's not a good thing normally.
