Possibly related side note: there are currently 1,016 military planes in the air (and that's just the ones we can see). Per Monkey Werx, the daily average is around 250.
Interesting times...
ETA on this top post for greater visibility: For those folks using https://globe.adsbexchange.com/ to track aviation activity who are getting different numbers of crafts on screen, I may have discovered a (one possible) reason why.
If you look over on the right at the vertical column of buttons with single letters (on laptop), one is marked P (for Persistence). I had that one toggled on. Here is what ADSBExchange has to say about that button:
Persistence Mode = Leaves planes on screen after signal lost.
I'm unclear on whether that means the planes stay on the screen even after landing or if the planes are still in the air, but stop transponding, yet still remain on the screen due to being tracked under Persistence Mode. Once I toggled that mode off in both of my test screens, the numbers lowered significantly (they're hovering in the 160s right now).
So there you go. I'm sure there are some much more knowledgeable people here who can chime in. I am but a lowly tester. :-)
Again, I'm sorry to have hijacked the newest Q drop thread. ADSBExchange is an awesome tool and I have a hunch knowing how to use it will come in VERY handy in the coming days/weeks.
He hasn't done any posts tonight yet, but he's mentioned several times in previous posts that 250 is the average.
If you want to watch the aviation action yourself, you can go here (just in case you didn't already know this): https://globe.adsbexchange.com/
ETA: FYI to anyone visiting there for the first time, look for the three buttons on the top right (at least on my laptop) with a single letter in them - U, H, and T. Click the U so it's blacked out. Now you'll only see military and contractor craft rather than all the commercial traffic. It's a very cool site!
No problem. Fair warning, that site is ADDICTIVE! And when you pair it with https://flightaware.com/ to track landing/departures... Well, be ready to lose some time. LOL
Decee22 just met up with another large jet, aligned its flight path, and the secondary plane turned its gps off.. Two planes, one gps, flying super slow to intercept with fred22 over KY
I've seen planes change their call signs midflight. I've seen planes with no call signs at all. I just saw one today that had (on FlightAware) a notice that said it was not being tracked at the request of the owner. I've seen planes with call signs that indicated they hadn't flown in over 20 years, even though there was a craft with that call sign in the air at that very moment.
Is there something I'm missing on adsbexchange? I go there and hit the 'U' icon, but I see way fewer planes than anyone else. The other day I was watching Monkey werx live stream, and where he saw 700+ I saw 200. I wasn't lagged or anything like that, because all the planes I saw on my screen were on his screen, too. He just had over 3x more visible than I did.
ETA: Ohai, first time poster over here. Been lurking for a while, didn't get around to making an account, then SSO hit.
I'm very much an ASBSExchange newb, so I may not have much expert advice to offer. I also noticed sometimes Monkey Werx was seeing much higher numbers than I was seeing.
Here is something you could look at - again, I'm a big ole newb, so take this with a grain of salt. Over on the right (on laptop), you should see 3 tabs: Search | Filter | Columns. Check your Filter and your Search to make sure you don't accidentally have your results limited in some way. You can clear those search results or filters by clicking the Reset button. Ask me how I know this... ;-)
Nope, this happens even if I open a fresh incognito window. Plus I get the exact same results in Brave, Brave w/ Tor window, and Tor browser. I don't get it. :-/
Just for giggles, I opened a fresh instance of ADSBExchange to see how the numbers looked and to compare my settings since I still have a lot to learn.
Interesting comparison - both screens show all the same settings (that I'm aware of - I just clicked through every clickable thing and compared what was toggled on and what was toggled off). Both focused on military craft only. Both focused over the continental US and surroundings. In one screen I have a current onscreen count of 1147. On the newer screen, my onscreen count is 253 and climbing slowly. Not sure what to make of that, but it's interesting to note.
And my apologies to all for hijacking the Q drop thread. Yay Q! Very happy to see some comms!
Yay!

I knew the 250, didn't know where the 1,016 came from.
Thanks. I keep up with his stuff

That is 100% interesting.

Seems like something is going.
I have not. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the heads up.
We'll need more sources to confirm it.

this stuff is pretty interesting.
Yes! Isn't some of this stuff crazy?!

So many interesting anomalies, so little time.

I am also only seeing 127 on the mil flight filter..

WWG1WGA_WW!
So weird. Please let me know if you figure out how you got the higher number!
Hey u/hitchhiker, I may have stumbled upon one possible explanation. I updated my top post for greater visibility. Let me know your thoughts.
A year ago I would be mad if q dropped a music video after a month of nothing.. but this.. this is perfect ?

What does that mean? Does that mean an hour from the drop look for something?

Here's the interpretation of the drop:
Video length = 3:09 Drop #309 = Justice. Drop timestamp = 5:05:50 = 555 Drop #555 = We are WITH YOU.
Note 3-year delta of ‘Justice’ drop is TOMORROW
