No that's actually proper grammar, you put a comma before the persons name to indicate that is who you are speaking to. I do it all the time in work emails when I say something like 'thank you, Eric. Have an excellent day!" I'm not expressing that Eric sent the thank you, but rather the thank you is directed towards Eric.
I thought it was just a cute photo of his lifelong partner in crime. Maybe a dramatic final farewell for the history books.
But now that you mention it, they were probably spies at the time this picture was taken. Meaning encrypting the photo with hidden messages is totally on the table.
