POTUS must isolate himself to prevent negative optics.
He's got to go through the correct steps. He cannot be seen to be using the military to take out his political opposition. He's got to step out of the way and let the military do its job unhindered and unbiased.

No matter what happens or doesn't happen, as of 12 noon 1/20/21, DJT is no longer the president. If he declared martial law or the insurection act he still would not be the president after 12 noon, 1/20/21. He may be declared the president later on or in a proven win in the election.

Just to be clear, trump doesn’t have to appear to resign, he legally and morally needs to be completely removed from the situation. Any one taking the office next (apart from the Interim power structure) has to clearly demonstrate to the American people that they fairly won an election.
