This is actually normal.
Transponders and tracking switch off only when leaving controlled airspace (airports etc). All of them are civilian helicopters, the majority of them are departing from Aberdeen International Airport, a civilian airport, and all of them are bound for the North Sea.
And in the North Sea, there are a shit load of oil rigs, 184 of them:

If you do an image search for North Sea oil rigs and you might find photos of a dozen oil rigs lined up in a single area. It wouldn't surprise me if helicopter traffic is frequent (think of a bus, train or ferry timetable) and by the minute for this reason.

It's now about 9am-10am in the North Sea so this is morning peak-hour traffic.
Damn. We gotta stop stickying normal stuff. Especially with titles like “it’s happening”.
Thanks for the explanation.
You could make a mega thread and an announcement to stop spamming new.
That way all the plane stuff will be in one place, and when something actually is happening regarding plane stuff it can get its own post.
Edit: Actually I think I remember being tried here. What happened to that?
This isn't normal. NATO Boeing E-3 Sentry patrolling open waters https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_E-3_Sentry Dozens of military helicopters: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_S-92 AgustaWestland 139's are typically used for search and rescue, though have military applications. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AgustaWestland_AW139
Transponders going off for a few as they go over the water.
Transponders go off because the land based adsb antennas doesn’t have sufficient coverage.
We have awacs patrolling the north/Baltic sea every day, the swedes have their “ski box” and the Russian have their “Mainstay”, all three are operating more or less 24/7 over “open seas”.
Yeah, I see nothing abnormal
At least you admit it ?
What I do know is that for a week+ now activity over Europe has been abnormally low(like 5-6 planes at the MOST)... and now this...
Last time the activity level was this high was around the 6th..........
