Not this. Not at all.
If you believe that column, you had better do some hard digging. First off, the person writing that column is literally a scholarly member of the Catholic Church. He's the Augustin Cardinal Bea, S.J. University professor. He works for the church treating abusers (ie covering for them).
The fact that he says that the church has "used best practices to deal with this issue since 2002" is a ludicrous statement.
The Catholic church, to this day keeps their records of abuses secret unless brought to court, moving priests around to different diocese. Plante also claims in that article that the number of abuses has "dropped to a trickle." That's horse shit. The very offices in charge of dealing with abuse in the church can barely keep up with the amount of complaints streaming into it. The number has grown 4x in the past decade.
The report cited in this column is the John Jay report, which doesn't say that only 4 percent of the Catholic clergy are predators. It says that 4 percent of the clergy serving in the United States had formerly had abuse complaints made against them. And do you know how I know those numbers are wrong? Because the AP discovered more clergy members (1700) who had had complaints filed against them whose behavior had actively been hidden by the Church.
As for school teachers, that 5-7 percent is not the number of teachers being accused of abuse, that's the percentage of students that claim sexual abuse in school. Now, that's still a horrible thing, but when you look at the ratio of students to teachers, 5-7 percent of students is a much larger number than 5-7 percent of teachers. It also is the inverse of the church situation.
There's a lot to be said for sexual harassment and sexual assault in school and other places. But it's absolutely insane to compare public schools to the Catholic church and its systematic cover up of literally thousands of abusers world wide.
Catholic priest here. In principle, I do not disagree with anything you said, however, there are distinctions to be made. Please don't consider anything that follows a defense... (Before I begin, though, Augustin Cardinal Bea died in 1968. I am not sure what you are attributing to him.) First, the percentage of satanic pedophiles is quite low in over-all proportion. I cannot cite numbers or references because only these evil, bad-actors really know. That being said, the higher up the hierarchy you go, the higher the proportion. They are the "Deep Church" branch of the whole Cabal/One World Order thing. Second, outside of the satanists, the percentage of true pedophiles is in line with the statistics of societal norms (which is horrifying). (I'm sorry. I seem to have lost my references, but these things can be looked up and verified. Depending on how you interpret the John Jay Report, you can see it quite clearly.) Third, the John Jay Report (and almost every other one) sidesteps that the vast majority of these cases is against post-pubescent males. The technical term for this is Ephebophilia. Since they are post-pubescent, the attraction is to those that by definition are physically mature. This means the attraction is homo sexual. (Not my opinion, look it up in a psychological dictionary).
Fourth, it is unclear exactly what percentage of priests are homosexual, but I would guess both from studies and my own experience that depending on the area, it varies between 30% and 70%. Maybe higher in some places. Perhaps a significant number of these men do not embrace a homosexual lifestyle or act out, however, many do. Moreover, they protect each other, promote each other, are subsequently more morally deficient and blackmail-able, etc. Therefore, the crisis is manifesting as pervasive homosexuality in the priesthood vastly higher in proportion than in society at large. To the degree that they act out, leads also to their mental/emotional/spiritual/theological corruption as well. This holds the rest of us down and either squelched (go along to get along) or constantly in trouble or sent off for reeducation or resentful or leave. Almost nothing in the Church is encouraging holiness and inspiring a desire for sanctity. On the other hand, God is using the persecution and hideous mess to wake us up and to take responsibility for this abomination of desolation. (Daniel 3:26-45) If I hadn't truly met Jesus Christ in the Sacraments practiced at my hands, I would have left the Church. As it is, I will not abandon Him to this mess or hold Him hostage to the sins of men. Just like Francis is at one and the same time the head of the Church and head of the Anti-Church, so the Church itself is both at one and the same time the beautiful, spotless, Mystical Bride of Christ and the whore of Babylon. Almost two years ago, the Pew Research Center conducted a study of belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Among practicing Catholics, the number was 31%. After seeing how He has been treated by priests and bishops during this 'pandemic', I suspect that 31% extends to the clergy as well. The good will and desire to follow the path of righteousness in the majority of Catholics has been used against us by the Enemy. He has crippled us by weaponizing obedience and orchestrated a mutiny from within over the course of many years. I think God is going to use the secular powers to scourge His Church, because there is no normative legal path for us to do anything about the situation. (Cf. pretty much ALL the pre-Exile Prophets) The Church isn't a democracy. The leaders do not have to answer to those under them like in our civil government. Therefore, if someone unscrupulous ascends to these positions, they only answer to Christ--that is supposed to be so that they can preach the Gospel in season and out without fear of men. Answer to Christ, they will. (1Sm 24:7) Please pray for the purification of the Church--not just the Catholic Church! If the whole human part of the institution as it is currently comprised has to be destroyed in the process, so be it. The satanic, pedo, human trafficking, horror HAS TO BE STOPPED no matter the 'cost'. Am I hopeful? Yes. Very. God wins. He wins from the Cross, though. We must be praying and sacrificing and staying united to Him as He is always united to us--especially in our sufferings. I ask everyone: what sacrifice are you willing to offer in union with Him as He accompanies these poor children in their horrors and delivers them by the hands of soldiers and others? Jesus was the first to say WWG1WGA.
Quick question. Did the Catholic Church really start based on the passage of the Bible relating to Jesus stating that His church would be based on the faith of Peter?
Quick answer: No.
That being said, if you are going to ask for what it is based on then, that is like asking if Newtonian physics is based on the fact that an apple hit him on the head. It is easy to ask a question in a short way that requires a book to do justice to the answer.
Can you elaborate on how you got those numbers in the 3rd paragraph? The article you provided doesn't actually support the statement you're making. The 1,700 priests were not 'discovered' by the AP, they were being 'checked up on' and found to be unsupervised after being discharged from their roles as clergy members. The names of the 1,700 were found through lists that the Catholic Church provided of clergy that they considered 'credibly accused' of abuse. It's also worth taking into consideration that many of the cases that are being reported are a) from adults who were abused as children, so while the actual abuse may have taken place decades ago, the reports are only now being filed and taken seriously, and b) the article you linked to cite 4x growth in reports is taking into account international reports, not just that of the U.S., while Plante's article is citing that 4% statistic from a US-only study. Quote: "“We’re effectively seeing a tsunami of cases at the moment, particularly from countries where we never heard from (before),” Kennedy said, referring to allegations of abuse that occurred for the most part years or decades ago. Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Italy and Poland have joined the U.S. among the countries with the most cases arriving at the congregation, known as the CDF." The Catholic Church isn't faultless by a long shot, and it's been demonstrably proven that they were involved in child abuse cover-ups previously, but it also certainly isn't as bad as it has been in the past.
