I could never figure out what EEEEEE meant, and it bothers me to this day.

Think it means "Error" I have a calculator from the 70s that only has 6 digits/places. When it qraps/overflows, it shows EEEEEE

Ahhh so that's what it was!

Those digital display calculators were still around in the 90s and into the early 2000s. And yes the older or less complex ones had a bad habit of flooding the screen with EEEEE. The newer ones were programmed to show exponents for overflow answers ( "× 10n" or "mEn") so the EEEEE behaviour was phased out as the newer calculators came to market. Damn I feel so old.
