I think those stats include drive by shootings in Chicago (as an example) if more than 3 people are shot. It doesn't necessarily mean these big theatrical things.
Hasn’t the FBI redefined mass shootings though? They say there were like 25 in a year, and everyone remembers, like, two. I once read that a teacher accidentally discharged a gun into the parking lot pavement after hours, no one around, and that was included in the statistics as a “school shooting”. I think a lot of gang violence gets included in mass shootings too, but when it’s one gang going after another gang, that’s not really what normal people are worried about.
