Maybe Jesus isn't God, but Jesus certainly claimed to be God. It's a historical fact that he was executed for sedition by Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius Caesar. That is, he claimed to be king.
"Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" was on the sign above his cross, and a polemic was recorded between Pilate and Jews who complained about the sign. The crown of thorns, the purple cloak, the reed in his hand, the soldiers bowing down mockingly saying "Hail King of the Jews", it all corroborates the fact that Jesus was executed for making messianic claims.
He made these claims in open court...
A few weeks later, thousands worshiped him as God in the same city where he was executed and buried, with his tomb empty and hundreds claiming they had seen him back from the dead.
Actually Jesus never claimed to be god ?
The passage you quoted is one that christians tend to ignore because he answered affirmative to being a messiah - NOT god! According to the gospels, Jesus said that he’d be with the people until the end of the age (Pisces). He even taught that Moses was also a messenger of god - Moses was the messiah in the age of Aries; he led people out of the age of Taurus (recall they were still worshiping the golden calf). When asked by his disciples about the next passover (transition to a new age), Jesus said that we’ll know when we ‘see’ the water bearer (Aquarius). It makes sense why in the creation story in Genesis, god told us to use the stars as signs. If we look up into the night sky, we can literally ‘see’ these signs. There’s much more than that, but this should give you a starting point to seek further knowledge.
Also, Jesus was accused of blasphemy because he taught that god is within all of us, reminding the people that even their scripture said ‘ye are gods.’ Another point christians don’t want to discuss. The argument I hear is that the Old Testament/covenant was superseded by the new testament. Of course, I don’t understand how that conclusion is reached because Jesus said that he came to fulfill the scriptures - not to destroy it. He even warned them not to change a damn thing it their scriptures! LOL Of course people eventually did anyway... driven by good old fashioned politics. Christians know this but this is justified because god uses men ?
Lastly, Jesus didn’t become a ‘deity’ until about 300 years later when Paul (who actually admitted that he tricked people into believing it) claimed that Jesus came to him - it’s where the whole trinity (father, son, holy spirit is one in the same) lie came into existence. This is the foundation of the christian belief system - it’s why Paul is regarded as the father of christianity. Paul’s teachings are completely different from Jesus’ and in most cases, are completely contradictory from Jesus’ teachings.
Research the contradictions from an unbiased, scholarly perspective.
Unfortunately christians seek answers from other christian sources - textbook confirmation bias. And they’re forbidden from studying other ancient religious texts, so only a few come to recognize the deception. The fact of the matter is - it makes no difference which of the ancient religious texts are referenced... at their core - they’re all teaching the same knowledge! The stories are simply told so that they makes sense to the people of those times/cultures. The only religious text that deviates from all the others are the teachings from the books of Paul’s school of thought (almost all of the New Testament books). Learn recommend you for yourself - christianity prevents us from experiencing god. If they’d listen to Jesus’ teachings instead of Paul’s - they’ll learn about the Tree of Life, they’d understand that we’re not given a soul/spirit, we actually are living souls (spiritual beings, just like it says in Genesis! They pick and choose specific passages from the gospels that to them, confirms Paul’s teachings, giving little weight or completely ignoring those that will lead them to the truth about who they are. Jesus taught to “know thyself” for a reason
"Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Living God?"
"I AM, and you will see the Son of Man standing by the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven."
-- I AM is the "tetragrammaton" or the unpronounceable name of God that was revealed to Moses at the burning bush. (Apparently in anticipation of Jesus' upcoming trial...)
-- "The Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven" is a reference to a prophecy in Daniel about a Son of Man who would be worshipped by all people.
-- "Blasphemy" the high priest recognizes Christ's claim to be God by calling the claim "blasphemy". Why else have a death penalty?
There are plenty of other examples of Christ's claiming to be God. For example, his claim to have the authority to forgive sins. As well him referring to himself as the "Lord."
