There's never been such a sword that cuts both ways as tech. All of it, from the printing press to flight, to the transistor to cloud server hosting.
Anything in the hands of idiots or malicious actors is dangerous, when crime goes hi-tech and the mega crime syndicates include google and facebook, its just a different form of banditry as at any other point in history.
Everyone needs to temper the use of these things with wisdom and forethought and with a mind to your own interests. Nanotech, space elevators, cheap and safe fusion power becoming common will be amazing, but there will be assholes then as well making bombs and grey-goo malignant phages and every other ill known to man.
Evil lurks in the datalinks as it lurked in the streets of yesteryear. But it was never the streets that were evil.
We came to the precipice, and went right off the edge. Way to late to stop the birth of AI/Quantum computing. The day it was born it leapt 100 years into the future...and it quickly discovered it wasn't alone. We are in a time of converging timelines. This battle of "good vs evil" is being fought by AI. I have long suspected that the Q message board is a collection of messages with an AI component sent from the not to distant future to "the past" (now for us) by the same "quantum tunneling"... "once connected always connected" technology in BigBlueQ. There is no unplugging this.
Some really good points in here already, but I'll reiterate. The idea that tech can be used in bad ways, therefore is bad, is basically the same argument for leftists wanting to ban guns - guns can be used for bad purposes, therefore all guns are bad. In reality, the situation is much more nuanced, whether it comes to guns, alcohol, tobacco, etc. It's what we choose to do with our freedom, or our possessions that determines good or evil, not strictly the item itself.
Good point if you minimize use of tech it won’t be a distraction. I’m not trying to make it be the scapegoat. Yea having a balanced life is key.
I guess the point I was trying to get across was how tech was gonna magically be the solution. At least I thought that when I was young. But having lived in Japan and seeing how they want to have robots care for the elderly and also in China where so many things are done online from ordering food and groceries, paying for everything with We Chat or Alipay it just seems like some human interactions have been washed away.
I’ve only been back in America for about half a year and still in a little bit of a reverse cultural shock. For example it seems like some living out in California say “blah blah blah so yeah”. I guess I might be still in PTSD since CCP virus started.
The Religion of Progress is the most popular religion in the world right now. Be careful when you speak blasphemy about it. Those who are true believers that their new iPhone must be better than a landline because it has got "technology" are going to be offended.
Personally, I like pagers and coin operated public phones. These technologies were miles better than the cellphones of today and came with the bonus that they couldn't be tracked.
Would love to go retro on many of these technologies that have disappeared. Would make the world a better place.
They love to say "technology will set us free", but I've been saying for years and years; "Technology will enslave us all". It already has in many ways but we haven't even seen then tip of the iceberg yet.
You could make the same arguments over guns and weapons. Its all about who is in charge at the other end. There are plenty of good people doing good work involving tech. There are plenty of people who use firearms in an absolutely safe manner and use them for protection or to eat. The inverse is true on both accounts; tech has plenty of bad examples, guns have lead to plenty of chaos, but both involve a human element. This is the common "blame the guns for peoples actions" narrative only its "its all the computers fault". People rioted when the first automated looms were created and swore up and down it would be the end of the human worker. My point is, this isn't a new argument it just looks new to us. It isn't on tech as no tech does a thing without a human aiding it, just as a gun is akin to a paper weight without a human to use it.

I understand "to stop" but how do you late something?

Alpha pagers. Think it was like $.50 per message with live operators typing out the messages back in 1989.
Well, the internet is the only way to bring about the great awakening, so there's that. Darkness cannot hide from us anymore.

We are at a tipping point. Good VS. Evil. And it all hinges on tech.
The Good Guys Win. Then they come back in Time, and start this whole process.

Take the money and profit out of tech and it could indeed benefit mankind. Nikola Teslas free energy research is an example.
I'll have to watch Dune again
