It can open up security vulnerabilities on your machines due to poor software engineering practices. You can search for CVE reports for past vulnerabilities anti-virus software has introduced. I guarantee you everyone had a vulnerability.
It hogs up system and memory resources for little protection.
Your better off with best practices of not opening random files, only downloading from trusted sources, and using sandboxed environments when possible.

I don't use that McAfee garbage - - it was a well learned lesson....it was like terminal cancer took over my computer years ago .
