have you ever heard roger scruton? id say the conservative philosopher of our age. recently deceased buried near cambridge england. wrote a book called The Soul Of The World - have listened a bunch of times now. believe it or not he articulates cognitive dualism which allows both for the spiritual and the physical to coexist, and in fact requires it. if you have audible i highly recommend it. god bless
I've a fan of Unificationist thought, which outlines a clear and logical explanation of the dual nature of existence and the cosmos, as well as the relationship dynamic between these dual aspects.
e.g.
The cosmos exists as the creation of the Creator (the Source, the pre-singularity, God, etc), embodying both internal character and external form, like 2 sides of the same coin
On the cosmic level, that equates to a spiritual world (higher frequency) and material world (physical universe) (lower frequency)
on the individual level, that equates to one's mind (spirit) and one's body (flesh)
all created beings exhibit this duality - internal (invisible) character that directs, and external (visible) form that responds and acts accordingly
: laws of physics - particles, atoms, etc = mineral forms
: plant nature - plant forms = plant species
: animal instincts - animal bodies = animals
: mind - body = humans
These two dual aspects of existence relate together as: invisible - visible; internal - external; initiator - responder; governing ruler - responding partner (i.e. leader - follower)
all energy for existence, action, multiplication derives from a reciprocal relationship of give & receive action between 2+ partners, and in the above cases, the two dual aspects relate together which equals LIFE and existence ('death' occurs when the mind (spirit) and the body (flesh) part ways)
in unity, the two aspects, derived from the Creator's own nature, become united into a new whole, in a 3 step process which can be labeled as Origin - Division - Union process
Origin: The Source (God) has both an inner nature (consciousness) and an 'external' (or responsive) form (a sort of pre-energy, that underlies all energy within the cosmos)
Division: In the Creation process, the Creator manifests these dual aspects as divided partners: e.g. as mind and body in humans
Union: the divided dual aspects engage in a giving and receiving relationship (e.g. instructions/directions + response/action) which results in a union: e.g. a living human being
The Union thereby reflects the original unity of the Creator (God) and thus, now a reciprocal relationship is created between the Creator and the Created, as internal/external, character and form. All humans were originally created to manifest God's full nature, so that God's spirit and consciousness (internal character) would manifest through human beings (the external form or expression of God's being).
Thus, all human beings were created as divine children, as the manifestation of the Source or Origin of the universe.
This perfect, ideal structure and design was thrown into chaos when the original human ancestors deviated from the Creator's guidelines, and became corrupted (fell). That's the reality behind the story in the Bible of the Garden of Eden.
Anyway, there are many other dimensions to this framework (how energy is exchanged, how growth occurs, what is responsibility and what role does it play, etc) but personally, I've found the explanation and clarification of the dual nature of the cosmos to fit extremely well with the observed reality I live in everyday.
wow thanks for the teriffic reply. ireally think theres something to it as a way to move beyond a simple rationalism which often leaves out so much of the good stuff of life. saving your post to research further
I may sound silly, but I have always loved Twin Peaks and films by Lynch because of his constant themes regarding the duality of human nature. The conceot of "cognitive dualism" is very intriguing...
A great intellect. It’s a shame Scruton isn’t better known. If he were any sort of leftist, he would of course be regarded as one of the great minds of the 20th century
If you're now to Scruton, the absolute best place to start is his BBC film Why Beauty Matters. I feel like it encapsulates everything else in all his other writings and ties them to visual art and objects that make it easy to understand and recognize. Plus it's letting you in on a secret about Modern Art and why it's so awful.
