endgame-now is correct.
I assume when you say Microsoft SQL you're referring to their database engine, Microsoft SQL Server. SQL, as endgame-now explained, is a Structured Query Language allowing us to easily query the underlying database. Not sure who first proposed SQL, but most databases allow you to use SQL to access them.
If you've been working as a data quality expert for 10+ years this should all sound familiar to you.
