The next world wide pandemic might be a virus that renders a super majority of humans unable to hear.
Hearing loss will be the crisis of the new generation.
All speeches will need to be done or accompanied by signing.
....
Can someone educate me on why there is a sign language interpreter present in most if not all political speeches? Is the deaf population so large and illiterate that live captions can’t be done? And in the language of your choice or tongue?
My best guess is that it's putting sign language out there so we get used to it. Once we're used to that goofy mime being there, they can throw comms to someone right infront of everyones face, and we wont he able to understand it.
i absolutely hate the sign language shit... i WISH it could be optional... something we could disable
but i think there is a reasonable logic behind it. the automatic captions are dogshit and live transcription is not cheap. a signer is probably 10x cheaper than a transcriber (srs)
i guess english is probably the best your gonna do for captions
but just my experience... i do watch a significant number of videos in portuguese and the automatic captions are absolutely abysmal.... but if you're telling me they can at least be good in
english then i will believe you
im sure there is an element of virtue signaling but im not entirely sold

I've wondered about this too.

That's just a half assed guess though.

I’ve worked with Microsoft AI for captions and it’s incredibly good.
Especially since no one is actually at these speeches and they’re televised, this is 100% virtue signaling.

Money, it's an industry and makes money.
