The Jolly Rogers have been around forever. That very plane/squadron was the inspiration for the skull squadron in Macross which became the first third of Robotech. For several decades carrier launched F-14s were feared around the world. Just ask the Libyans. Not the Punisher symbol but it might as well be.

Top Gun... Tom Cruise's character flew F-14s. Goose was a RIO.
