You're thinking of Drew Barrymore, did a quick Wiki search on her. It says there that she wrote about ithat time in her life in an autobiography 'Little Girl Lost' and she was emancipated at age 15.

Yes, I couldn't think of her name. I thought she had been emancipated. Thank you. Notice we don't hear much from the other child actors in the movie either.
