I've noticed this too. They also do it with the word "as" to make simultaneously occurring events seem somewhat related in the title.
E.g. COVID-19 cases continue to rise as Trump retreats to Mar-a-Lago for the weekend.
It's almost as if the COVID vaccine does nothing except kill people.
If they change “despite” to “because of” then it would be the truth
Where oh where can we use BESPOKE here?? It worked in the tranches... 😉

Etymology:
despite (n., prep.) c. 1300, despit (n.) "contemptuous challenge, defiance; act designed to insult or humiliate someone;" mid-14c., "scorn, contempt," from Old French despit (12c., Modern French dépit), from Latin despectus "a looking down on, scorn, contempt," from past participle of despicere "look down on, scorn," from de "down" (see de-) + spicere/specere "to look at" (from PIE root *spek- "to observe").
