I am the same as you. Everyone thinks I am crazy for printing out directions but if you just use google maps, you'll forget how to get anywhere, you'll rely on them to get places as well as telling google where you are and where you are going.
If you don't have a smartphone, you won't miss it.
Honestly google maps has screwed me so many times, it's not as accurate as they want to make people believe it is. I have a smartphone, I just disable everything google about it. I know that doesn't stop them completely from tracking me somehow, but I have confirmed it's not tracking my whereabouts anymore - they have a website that one of our clients (I work for an attorney) used as an alibi in a criminal matter, to show that he wasn't where they thought he was (where the crime was committed), and his case was dismissed. (not trying to sell their service, but this is a true story) I used that to see if my locations have been tracked, and they haven't been. I have a pretty good navigational head about me, and I've been in lots of places for the first time, driving around and gotten myself lost more times than I can count, and I always find my way back.
Plus, I can always pull up a still map of an area to find my way around. We were in Nashville a few months back, and absolutely NO directions could get us to the Hard Rock Cafe. They all had us driving in a circle - google maps included. So I finally just pulled up a still map of the area, looked at what intersection I was at, and found my way like that.
