One thing that feels off is the idea that the entire guard would resign. You can easily imagine a subset of it doing so, but the larger the group of people the less likely you are to have unity on a tough decision.
I think in joining an organization like the guard you have to expect that you'll be protecting some extremely shitty people and decision-making from time to time. So you can't say these guys didn't know what they signed up for.
