I definitely see a lot of parallels with French History leading up to revolution. Also something to keep in mind as well that the Mississippi bubble started the following year with the establishment of the Banque Générale and the subsequent hyperinflation that ensued.

The Palace of Versailles, IIRC, was built in/on a swamp. Draining it was a major undertaking. The DC comparison is very apt.
