I worked on a compressor station that blew up and I can tell you, gas lines blowing up do a LOT of damage. Yes, there is often a leak before they blow. And no, people often don't smell the gas until it's too late. You get a basement full of fumes that ignites and it's pretty scary. Remember, we're talking fumes, not liquid gasoline. Fumes are far more explosive.
IPoT did a video last year about a house in Detroit exploding like this.
Who's house was it? Who died?

That is not a gas explosion. There is a frigging smoking hole in the ground.
That’s what’s left of the basement.
Cool story, that it was a gas explosion unless the entire house was FLOODED with gas, in which case someone would have noticed before the explosion.
Sorry about the person dead.

There's literally zero to suggest that this isn't a natural gas explosion
