You can always take trips to the coast if you love the ocean.
Another consideration is taxes .. no state income tax, that in itself will save you anywhere from ~5% (look up the NY state income tax brackets for your tax filing status). Plus I imagine the cost of living is lower depending on location, etc.
Lots to consider, but I suggest before taking the plunge to start looking for jobs, maybe take a trip or two to SD and check it out, etc.

From New York...believe me I would never vote blue. I’d miss the ocean though. I guess there’s large lakes there that would compensate?

East river has a lot of manufacturing. Sioux Falls would be a good bet.
