So I got home today and thought something was burning. I got online and saw two news articles saying there was a small chemical leak last night.... about 20 miles away from where I am! (yeah, small leak my ass) It reeks, I have a headache and immediately started coughing. Turns out Lubrizol (owned by Warren Buffet) has been leaking chemicals since yesterday. Local news is barely covering it and they retracted the original statement saying it was Hydrogen Sulfide. I cant find many answers since I dont have main stream social media but I would like to know what the fuck I am breathing. Anyone around the area with any info?

Seabrook area herre...
Have been smelling a hint of natural gas smell but I'm feeling fine and all local stories and authorities saying nothing to worry about
It has pretty much gone away by now
cool.. i am glad you are feeling ok... apparently this was almost 24 hours ago and its strong AF here and if the authorities say there is nothing to worry about and the media is keeping silent do you REALLY think there is nothing to worry about? Are you new here?
Been in this area since 2006
I worked from home in Seabrook and could smell it distinctly this morning. A little bit of nose irritation his morning but gone now...
Only thing to do is trust the authorities on this one but I'm fine and smell has gone away here
Thanks but I will pass on trusting the authorities on this one. It could be nerve gas and they would say "its fine dont worry". I worked at the plants.. I know how they operate.
I know a lot of the chemical plants and refineries on the Houston Ship Channel and around SouthEast Houston, Pasadena, Deer Park, Laporte, Mont Belvieu and Baytown.
I know which plants are clean and we'll managed, which ones are older but employees try their best to maintain them, which ones have hazardous materials and which ones are relatively benign. I also know a few plants that are like you described.
Lubrizol is on the better end of the scale. Management are straight, employees are good, they pay well and keep good people and they maintain their equipment. You are far safer walking down the street at a Lubrizol plant than virtually any city street. I don't work for Lubizol and don't have at relationship with them, but I won't watch a good company being criticized unfairly.
Well my point was more along the lines of what can you do about it at this point guess I should have added /s
I have 4 big dogs so a lot harder to up and leave but no doubt if I was feeling symptoms
Good luck fellow pede....good to see so many of us on here Really stepping up almost immediately
God bless Texas
Thanks! apparently they are being tight lipped on what people have been breathing in for the past day. Cant be anything good or they would just say it. You are right there isnt much that can be done but I will keep looking. Appreciate it.
This maybe?

Thank you.... so its not hydrogen sulfide but they dont say what it is.. just what it supposedly is not.. how typical! I see a lot of people from a ton of surrounding counties complaining on the few local news outlets that have comment sections but no one has anything tangible so far. I appreciate the link though.
I've been in and around Lubrizol's main plant on 225 highway in Deer Park, Texas and the one in LaPorte dozens of times. They are clean facilities and well managed. The employees are top notch. I know quite a few and there's not a bad one in The bunch. The main products are lubricants, but like a any plant they will have a few hazardous materials, which is just part of petrochemical industry.
If you're that worried about it, maybe consider calling the plant and asking. Perhaps drive by and ask an employee. I don't know any that wouldn't just tell the truth about it. There's nothing to hide. It's not like people at these plants don't live in the same community and raise their families there. They do. Their kids go to school with yours. They shop at the same stores and go to the same churches. Not one of them would do a single thing to harm the environment or their own community and none of them I know would ever lie or cover something up.
Sugar Land here. Have had a very bad headache all day, but did not notice any odor while out earlier. I’ll start asking around!!!
I'm in League City and its bad. I guess its because I didnt know about it until I got home. Apparently it happened in La Porte. Thats REALLY far for chemicals to travel. Apparently they issued a shelter in place order as far as where I am all the way from La Porte. That is insane! Media is issuing blanket statements though
Best friend is in league city... just sent her a text. We have many friend who work and live in the la porte area. I’ll let you know what I find out.
Thanks! I am still digging. I can still look at twitter just not post since I dont have an account. Apparently theres a lot of people asking the same questions I am and getting no answers.
Harris County Pollution Control had tweeted: "A shelter in place order has been issued from La Porte Office of Emergency Management."
They later added: "Chemical leak at Lubrizol Plant 41 Tidal Rd. Deer Park, Texas.
"The chemical compound released is hydrogen sulfide. "
One local tweeted that their "eyes are burning."
The Lubrizol Plant said in a statement: "Tonight an odor incident tied to a rail car vapor release occurred at our Tidal Rd. facility. Other than potential noticeable nuisance odors, there is no impact or risk to the surrounding community.
"We are actively working to resolve this matter, including working w/local authorities to keep them advised. We apologize for any inconvenience."
Thanks! I found they released a statement saying it was not hydrogen sulfide it was Methyl Mercaptan and a hell of a lot of it. Will keep you updated if i grow another arm or leg lol
Oh, that makes sense. That's the odorant they put in natural gas that gives it the rotten eggs smell. Just a few drops are really potent. I can't imagine a train car relief valve blowing. I'm surprised they didn't shut down local plants too. That stuff is nasty. No wonder it spread so far downwind.
Yeah.. that part is true from my research. One expert I talked to is still very skeptical and saying that it is potent (he said its a loud smell) but he also said there is no way that a railcar could leak enough to cover that large a radius for over 24 hours. A lot of people are reporting it got stronger at around 3 AM. I am guessing they werent done with their release and started it back up in the middle of the night. It was supposed to rain and never did. Probably planned to release it while it was raining like they usually do and miscalculated. 0 mph winds, 90% humidity and no rain was not what they planned on.
Damn that place makes all kinds of nasty stuff. Check out their website and look at all of the products they make.
Oh I did... then I googled who owns it and its one of the big cabal members so of course anything it could be is going to be toxic AF. Warren Buffet owns the company that owns Lubrizol. A lot of people just shaking it off as a smelly chemical don't know just what kind of shit that plant makes. I cant name a single thing that wouldnt be hazardous and we are talking close to a 40 mile radius from what I can gather of people who have given their location that are effected by it.
