I was brought up that way. all the people I knew were left, teachers etc. I didn't have much access to other ideas.
Realisation crept in slowly, I realised that the MSM was lying to me with Iraq war 2 and the dodgy dossier. I lost all faith in the MSM gradually after 9-11 as I detected more lies.
Eventually, when I saw the different thought construction, I saw that my lack of self esteem was connected to the warped ideas from the left such as the enforced fairness and equal outcome.
