Used to be really excellent with top writers, editorials, award winning photographers, war correspondents, doctors, scientists, open debate via the letters to the editor (I got one published criticising Cameron), travel guides etc. Worth every penny.
Even through all that, we have to remember that it was always serving the narrative of the Elites, though extremely subtly to the point it gave an illusion that there was freedom of press and free speech. (Not just Times but all "great" publications). Just that they are used to nudging things slowly in the right direction.
Only because of Trump they had to do things at Warpspeed
If they did, it wasn't noticeable 40 years ago but then I was probably too young to see it. I started taking The Times when I was at school, stopped before Brexit when the propaganda became too nauseating. Will we ever return to proper reporting? We can only hope,
Even until 2016 no one would have noticed. Hell, I was happily listening to NPR all day up until early 2020 and proud of it. Now when I think back, I realise the subtle propaganda dripping in every piece they do, veiled in respectability.
My belief is that the media was invented to be propaganda. A big commercial media is never going to be unbiased because what you report is directly connected to your bottomline. We need to go back to local media. We need to go back to everything thats local/community oriented - education, banks, media - everything.
I notice it most in old films: 60's rebels (without a clue, never mind a cause) then slowly introducing and normalising drugs, promiscuity, homos, trans, "strong" women, family disfunction, ridiculing God and those who were virgins etc. Now its so blatant most films are unwatchable.
Yeah, even some of the Doris Day movies had very minute subtle propaganda already in it - its crazy how easily I can identify it these days. Show me a mainstream article and I can tell you the real truth they are hiding and what they are afraid of, and what they want specific brainwash they want to do
What's your take on 'The Economist'? I grew up reading that weekly mag and always found it excellent, but I stopped reading it quite a while back for various reasons (nothing to do with the content).
