Coded messages have been around for a while for sure. It's not like you can communicate directly, "Let's kill the king" unless you want to get hang.
Instead you make a symbol for the king like Apple. (And the King happens to be from X province"
Instead of "Let's kill the king" you send a letter that says, "I do love making apple sauce in X province. I hope you'll help me to make a lot of apple sauce soon. The apple sauce this year will be a scandal talked about for decades to come!"
It's way safer to say it that way. Comms and codes are necessity. It's just not always easy to figure out what they mean.
