Looks like its still speculation? This is all I could find in the linked CNN site from that article:
There are some interesting tidbits about this guy in this NYPost article
Who thinks he has been doing nefarious things with FBI long before this?
It's not speculation. It's not Google.
Article in the NY Times today.
Originator 1 works for Zetalyrics
Researcher 1 works at Georgia Tech.
Researcher 2 works at Georgia Institute of Technology
Tech Exec 1 is Rodney Joffe who just resigned from Neustar
This their lawyers responding to the Sussman indictment

Thanks for clearing that up!
I met Rodney Joffe about 11-12 years ago. He's South African, I actually found him pretty likeable, but like any CEO he was kind of an egomaniac.
The real story of how he came to prominence was much earlier than Butterfly... he helped take down Conficker (Operation Rampart Yankee for you .mil folks) around Thanksgiving in '08. IIRC he fucking hated the Obama regime's FBI and US CERT - Mischel Kwon in particular. All backstabbing pieces of shit that didn't know their asses from a hole in the ground.
He gave me a signed copy of Mark Bowden's "Worm"- yes, "Blackhawk Down" Mark Bowden. Fantastic book about the effort to contain that botnet, I highly recommend it.
Personally I think this dig is fishy.
It's Joffe. His lawyer confirmed to the NY Times today..
Man, that just hurts. I really had him pegged as a legit good guy.
Let’s just hope he talks
I am thinking more and more that Rodney Joffe is the red herring the media is trying to prop up to deflect from the real Tech Executive-1 who might be very high profile (Eric Schmidt certainly fitting the description).
Based on what you are saying, and assuming he did not turn, its possible Rodney was helping the White Hats in the FBI - perhaps that security loop hole that he exposed was actually being used by the Black Hats and they got pissed off when he exposed this.
Anyway, this first hand account is highly informative and worth digging more.
Could still be him, working undercover. Sounds crazy, but ... not crazier than a lot of other recent news.
Looked into the botnet a bit
One of the coders behind the bug is under investigation by the FBI for that crime - case opened in 2019
Do you remember the name of the coder?
Matjaž Škorjanc
He's also tied up in crypto.
Also has Slovenia - this is where Trump & Putin met after Trump assumed the presidency, also home country of FLOTUS & has a friendly as a PM.
Wikipedia
"NiceHash's founder Matjaž Škorjanc is a creator of malware Mariposa botnet, which infected over 1 million computers with Butterfly (Mariposa in Spanish) Bot. The goal of Butterfly Bot was to install itself on an uninfected PC, monitoring activity for passwords, bank credentials and credit cards. Slovenian national police force arrested Matjaž on charges of distributing the malware in 2010. Matjaž was found guilty and served four years and ten months in a Slovenian prison. On June 5, 2019, US law enforcement opened a case in the operations of the Mariposa (Butterfly Bot, BFBOT) malware gang.[19] The FBI has moved forward with new charges and arrest warrants against four suspects, including Matjaž Škorjanc.[20][21]"
Arrested Oct 2019

Thanks for this.
This is the kind of shit politicians do to each other all the time. They screwed up when Trump became President elect and double downed on it for the next 4 years. It’s not treason until the target becomes POTUS. What a Brilliant plan
