1944. I agree, it is not particularly important, other than a lot of people have heard the story. A quick search landed me on this page:

Otto Frank, a German Jew from Frankfurt, was the manager of a small factory in Amsterdam, Holland. Since Jews were considered “enemy aliens’ by the Germans, (just as Roosevelt considered the Japanese as enemy aliens, thus ordering the arrest and internment of 120,000 in concentration camps), the Germans placed the Jews in concentration camps.

To evade internment, Otto Frank prepared a “secret annex” on the second and third floors of his office’s warehouse. Only four of his employees knew that he lived here with his wife and two daughters. On Aug. 4, 1944, one of Frank’s employees reported him to the authorities and they were arrested. The family was sent to the Auschwitz labor camp in Poland.

Mrs. Frank died of typhus in the camp’s infirmary on Jan. 6, 1945. She and her husband had contracted this dread disease that was widespread among inmates. Otto Frank was in the concentration camp hospital when the war ended and later admitted that his life was saved by the German doctors.

If the Frank family was indeed transported to the “infamous death camp of the gas chambers”, why did the Germans go to all this trouble to save his life? The truth is that no gas chamber for the execution of human beings was ever located at any of the German camps. The “Auschwitz gas chamber” is a prop which was constructed by the postwar communist government of Poland for the benefit of tourists.

Because of the Soviet advance westward in October, 1944, Anne and her sister Margot were evacuated to the safety of Bergen-Belsen which was considered to be a model camp. Interestingly, the Germans allowed all who desired transport to camps in the interior of Germany to be moved there. Many, including Jews, feared the Red Army as much as the Germans. Some 6,000 of the sick, infirm and those who wanted to be taken by the Soviets remained in Auschwitz for its “liberation.”

Anne Frank died of typhus in March, 1945 while under the care of German nurses. If indeed there was an actual German plan calling for the extermination of Jews – why were they not gassed instead of being given medical care so desperately needed by the bombed-out German civilian population?

Strange death camp, that has a hospital and saves his life.

Most versions of the story claim there was a local that "kept the family safe, and in hiding." This version says that Frank is the one who set up the hiding place. This version makes more sense.

It’s a fake story
