Its DNS. Facebook cannot be resolved by a simple ping.
There are other networks that are down too. Discord is down in some area, along with slack.
We've seen this earlier this year too
Might be a Black Hat test of bringing down the whole DNS system in order to create a communications blackout later
Word on the street says its a BGP hijacking. Perhaps Russia? They have the clout to do it.
I remember when I first heard about the BGP protocol, and the presenter described how vulnerable it is, and how easy it was for someone in China to hijack ALL of the IP addresses, and how little protection there was, etc...
